Design Wall Monday 8-2-10

My, my my. It is Design Wall Monday again! Last week I was Number 12 and I probably won't beat the Redcoats across the pond to the Number 1 spot.

Cannot believe it is August except for the horrid heat that hits you when you open the door. They say the heat is hotter with humidity behind it, and whoever "they" are, are correct. It is hot.  Dogs got a bath yesterday and so did I.  I was soaking wet by the time I finished 184 lbs of dirty dog flesh.  But they are clean and soft.  Although Chloe the Smelly Basset did go and rub in something while I was washing Dutch.

My Design Wall is interesting. It stayed like it appeared last week until yesterday when I began working n the Get-The-Crap-Out-Of-My-House Challenge with V and Co. I actually cleared out a 2 foot by 2 foot section in front of my Design Wall and was able to get to it and rearrange some blocks. I admit I copied. But I really liked the Kitchen Sink idea. So I put them all together and dug up a couple of pieces I had done over the last few years when I had leftovers and didn't know what to do with them. Instead of cutting them up like I had first thought to do, I left them whole. Whereupon I will sew the other blocks to them and make them more whole.  I still have the Oriental blocks separate.

Then I saw what 9patchnurse did with her time on Sunday. And once again I was filled with intense desire to copy. You might as well put me in jail now for total and outright plagiarism. (Had to look up that spelling, I guess I have never written it before.) (And that would be a good thing.)

Speaking of that, did you read in the latest issue of Quilting Newsletter the article on Copyright? I daresay there is not an original thought in the quilting world anymore. If you even think up a quilt on your own you will surely copy one somewhere and they will come and get you. I thought the only way to really be free to make a quilt was to think on your own, but maybe even that is dangerous. I am sure I have seen just about everything somewhere before.
I don't know, maybe I will go hide under a  rock pile of fabric somewhere.....(I think I just copied that...)

OH MY GOSH!  I AM NUMBER ONE!  (tears of joy as I walk down the aisle with roses in my arms and a HUGE crown of rhinestones on my head.  And I am trying not to trip on my evening gown as I take the runway one last time!!)  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  1. Okay, I woke up way too early this morning, and decided just to checkout a few blogs. You are too funny! I've had my first smile and laugh of the week, before the coffee was even brewed! :)) Love your humor, you've also got a great voice in your writing. Thanks for a great start to my day!

  2. First of all congrats on your No. 1 spot!! I totally agree that there most ideas have been done before - still its always cool to come up with one you THINK is your own :)!! Great Board!

  3. Woo Hoo! You made the number one spot. Now the challenge is to stay there every week?

  4. Finally, Louisiana is first in something besides being laid back. The heat has been horrible. Leeapaul won't even go outside except to jump in the Element for a ride with air on. Love your design wall. The orientals will have to go some place...maybe in the center as a spotlight.

  5. It is hard to have an original idea in this age of constant information influx. I love your crumb blocks though. The idea might not be your own, but the blocks are yours for sure. Congrats on the number one spot. You must be an early riser.

  6. I've thought the same things about copyright too-have you every looked at a new pattern and said "hey-that's so and so block". --how's that work?
love your wall. I have a Gordon setter and a Westie-I get more wet bathing the westie than the
Gordon, but the Gordon finds better stinky stuff to roll in than the westie so maybe it balances out somehow. :)

  7. I thought I was going to fall off my chair when I saw you were #1 this week! LOL What's the next goal? I love your crumbs. I just finished my quilt on Thursday. And I wonder if it's copied or inspired by! Touchie subject with some. Love your humor.

  9. #1 - wahoo, way to go girlfriend. I want to know what time you posted to be #1. I can't believe you actually did it.

I think this whole idea of not 'copying' someone else's idea is getting a little overboard and ridiculous on some people's part. Why else do they show us their work if not to make us want to copy. If I had any original ideas, I wouldn't have to look at their work. Ok - off the soap box.

And, on a personal note, I think your design wall "laundry sink" (we can't call it the kitchen sink anymore you know) idea is lacking in color. Can you try being a little less reserved and just think about putting a little color into it.

    Hugs - Mabel

  16. Gen you are so funny. Glad you made it to the #1 spot. I too love your quilt blocks. I have been avoiding sewing scraps together and they just keep growing. I need to do some of that piecing to get rid of some things around here.

  17. So, now that you have accomplished # 1 - what is next?? Love your crumbs!

  18. Your quilt wall is great but what I really love is what you write! There's an article in the Sept/Oct McCall's Quilting on copyright laws that had me so furious I wrote a long and detailed email to them. the vast majority of the patterns out there are simply copies or derivations of the blocks that were made up 60-150 years ago by unnamed women who were probably happy with their anonymity. Keep up the great work!
