The Great Costco Adventure

You know that I just can't walk into a place and not cause a scene, right?

So Costco opened here for the first time ever last weekend.  We told each other we'd go today when everyone else in occupied in religion and not shopping.  I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

We have been members of Sam's for about 20 years now.  We don't do a whole lot of shopping there, but we do spend about $250 every couple months on vitamins, dog food, fruit, meat, stuff like that we always use.  I figured since everyone was going on and on and on about Costco being so much better than Sam's I would just go see myself.

We got in, bypassing the long line of people signing up for memberships.  I wanted to go in and see what the big deal was.  And if it wasn't such a big deal, I didn't need a membership after all.

On e inside, it even looked like Sam's.  Prices were much the same, product lines the same as well.  Although we couldn't find the dog food, Italian seasoning we love nor the bird seed.

But we filled our basket anyway since we had a temp pass.  Once at the checkout, we were told that to purchase we would need to purchase a membership.  Frank shrugged, we could do one year he says.  They validate my paperwork and I head to the membership booth to pick up my card.  A long line existed.

Up from the rear comes Frank with no groceries.  let's go, he says.

Costco only accepts American Express or Cash.  He had $186.42 in cash and the bill was $224.16  We don't have American Express.  We are not willing to change our financial arrangements just to shop a Costco.

Oh well, I guess we are a Sam's family!  I can't imagine all of the people I saw walking in there all have American Express.  I was shocked.  We have three Sam's in town,  so I don't need to go to Costco.  I was just plain shocked they didn't accept anything but AmEx.

  1. We use our debit card at Costco . . . cash flow dependent. I agree that taking only one card (no matter which one) is odd in today's world. (we have memberships at both - because some things we love are at one but not the other).
