Louisiana State Animal Rescue Team (LSART)

So last night I got home from the Shelter around 8 PM.  First thing I did was take a long shower!

Frank said he was having some difficulty watching all the coverage of the Texas flooding.  We are really not in danger of flooding or wind damage as we will get the feeder bands but not the brunt of the storm center areas.  Of course it all keeps changing minute by minute.

And Frank had scheduled a customer in Lake Charles LA on the TX/LA border.  I told him he was crazy to head that way.  He reconsidered and scheduled in AL.  That didn't make me feel any better when I saw the feeder bands as they are predicted today.  New Orleans is expected to get 5--6 inches of rain today, and we are west of that by an hour.

I talked to one of my CAAWS Board members who also flooded in our flood.  She echoed the feelings I have of needing to do something for these people who are right where we were last year.  Neither of us received any help from FEMA, the state, city or the federal governments.  So we both understand the feelings of being alone in this desperate loss.

And my thoughts always, as you have noted, turn to the animals.  Who saves the animals?

FEMA is supposed to have these 18 wheeler trucks with pet supplies and crates to pull animals out to other cities.  There should be a staging area, most likely west of the storm.  Maybe north because Dallas and Austin are there.  Austin is a huge dog friendly city, hopefully groups there are mobilizing to pull animals from the flooded areas.

In Louisiana we have LSART (Louisiana State Animal Rescue Team).  After the pathetic response to people who wanted to bring their pets with them, Pam Leavy, a past CAAWS board member, was instrumental in getting this set up and people across the state trained for emergency rescue of animals. Pam is still not back in her house from the flood, she had 11 feet of water.

So she knows too.

Geez, I always sound like I am preaching!  I  need to get a life......and get out of flood zones!

  1. Glenda, in or out floods will always affect you when you hear about them. A blog is an outlet for feelings - your feelings. Big hug! Keep letting it out.

  2. I so agree with Charlene, the floods will always affect you. Me too. Big rain, or the possibility of it always makes me antsy. Hugs to your babies and Magee's picture is wonderful. Take care

  3. No because you hurt you want to help. Help is needed. Hopefully you can find a way which won't cause your own wounds to reopen.
