Plaid Shirt Wonky Log Cabins

So we went to the Farmer's Market this morning and I spent the morning cooking up 2 cabbages, 6 cauliflowers, 8 broccoli.  I chopped 4 huge bunches of green onions into bags for the freezer.  I didn't buy turnips this time, I think I am getting tired of them for now.  So for lunch I ate the lettuces, some tomatoes, broccoli stems (they taste like artichoke stems when you put oil and vinegar on them!) and some Walden Farms Chipolte Ranch.

Then after cleaning up the kitchen, I didn't have to clean the floor, DiNozzo was catching everything I dropped, I headed to my room to sew the afternoon away!  That resulted in these guys.  I still have a pile of shirts, I think I multiplies during the night.  Nothing I do puts a dent in the pile.  So I now have 18 wonky log cabins out of the plaid shirts.  And I need two more, but I can gt them tomorrow.

I spent some time looking for a particular book that had shadows under the blocks, because I thought to cast shadows with these blocks.  But it turns out not to be what I want.  So I tested some background and I think I shall set them tilting.  Frank is appalled that a quilt would have uneven sashing and that the blocks would not be all straight and perfect.  So he left the room before his head exploded.  But before he left he cast his vote for the sashing he preferred and (surprisingly enough) it was the one I preferred.  Go figure that after all these years we finally agree on something.

This one is too light, the blocks fade into it.

This one is too dark, the block get absorbed by it.












This one is interesting, but busy.












This one is darker than the lightest one up there, but still not right.







I said to myself.......Think outside the box, girl.  And my eyes lit upon this one.
And it was good.....

A little experimentation

I have this scrap pile of plaid shirts leftover from cutting up shirts for two quilts.  Yes, TWO quilts!  You don't really figure there is that much fabric in a shirt, but there are a lot of pieces that are too small for this or that, and they just go into a scrap pile.

So I have been thinking about Log Cabin type blocks with the plaid shirt scraps.  And I had some time tonight to play a bit and see if there was any value to the idea.

I like them but have no idea what to do with them other than make more!  I can do that happily!  Maybe a border for one of the scrap quilts, maybe a whole other quilt altogether.  Who knows!

What would YOU do with them?   Maybe we need a Plaid Shirt Challenge?

Design Wall Monday 1-9-12

This week, the design wall is not a design wall actually.  It is the design...uh, ironing board I guess!

This is 280 2 1/2 by 18 strips for a plaid bargello quilt from Bonnie Hunter's book.  I had a ton of shirts from the 99 cent rack at the resale shop.  My basket was overflowing. 

I also cut out a strange star quilt from those same shirts.  But the basket was not depleting quickly enough so the bargello strips had to be cut as well.  I will have 8 yards for the next stash busting report, yeah.

I have a ton of shirts from the 99 cent pile of the local resale shop that I have collected over the years. Every once in a while I use one or two of them. But i thought to really decrease the amount of shirts with a couple of quilts. Retreat is coming up so I thought to cut up some quilt and use the retreat to put some tops together. Like I really need more tops......but I digress.

 

I put them into the double sided plastic container I purchased. Remember that great find for $4 a couple of days ago? Perfect. Here are the pieces cut up and arranged into separate compartments. They can't get lost. They can't get mixed up. Perfect.

Here is the other side that holds the test block. This block was the strangest block I have ever put together. It wasn't until Paula said, oh, it is on point within the block, that I understood exactly why they did it that way. Very strange and very confusing at first. Can you see how it is done? Bet you can't.

DiNozzo was pretty good this week.  He did steal some veggies from the counter, and the last tomato I had planned on using in the salad tonight.  But other than that he has actually been a good doggy today.  Oh, wait, Chloe says he did harass her tonight with the squeakie tearing around at high speed and jumping on the sofa on top of her a couple of times.
