Artist's Reception and a Stash Report

The Artist's Reception for Quilt the Swamp was this afternoon after the Contemporary Fiber Artists

of Louisiana meeting.  CFAL for short.  CFAL is such a diverse collection of people who work in various types of fiber, beads,  materials  and styles.  The show and tells are mostly amazing.

you know the two  pieces I have in the show, the Map of rouge Marais Plantation and OIL.  I really put the map in as a place holder, we could enter up to two pieces and I wanted to fill the two spots. 

I was really surprised at the reception the map had.  I was awed by the positive comments both pieces received but more surprised at those about the map.  I didn't think it was particularly great.  But several people, whose opinions I value, said really great things about it.  

I was humbled, because I so envy their work.  I guess that tells me I am on the right track. 

I am so interested in creating more of both styles, the maps and the industrial structure.  I need to make some rusted fabric and try out some painting techniques I have been reading and re-reading and re-re-reading.  Sometime, somehow, somewhere you just have to jump in and do it!

I also want to see if my fiber group would be interested in doing an eco-bundle.  I need to read up  and get some info for them this week.  Anybody do any of that before?

Ok.  I did use some fabric this week.  For the back of the book quilt, and I actually need to claim the front of the book quilt since I did not do that yet.  I can do it either this week or next, it really won't matter.  What does matter is that I have taken a top that needed quilting and created a back.  And that it all is on the frame to be quilted! 

Moving forward!  Still in the positive numbers but I hope to be into negatives by March!

Dec 26th And I Am Already Behind!

But would you expect any less of me?  I have to complete entry for Quilt the Swamp 2015 due first week in January. 

 Complete?  Did I say?  Ha ha!  I need to totally make it!

 So I actually started my Swamp piece today.  I want to make an oil derrick.  So here is my little derrick.  I just love them, this will be my third.  They are so structural, so black and white, so linear.

I need to find several good pictures of the Jack Horse Pumps so I can design one for the quilt as well. 

I have another idea that I want to do for the exhibit but may not get done.  Time, time, time.

I wonder what the theme will be for next year?  I wonder if I can make it early enough to actually do a good job on that piece?  I wonder if I will get my butt in gear (since I will have that Roomba keeping the dogs entertained) and actually get it completed early for once?

Squirrel to the Left!

I did manage to pull my bacterial ridden self up and walk around the yard for about 20 minutes before I collapsed back into bed.

I am better now.  Still, I have no voice.

Ok, I heard that, my hearing is still good......

Fiber Group Christmas Dinner

We ate at the Cheesecake Factory.  Or Bistro or whatever it is called now, all I know is that it has amazing desserts!  I had the chocolate fudge cake.  I did eat dinner first, crawfish ravioli.   But the desserts were the highlight of the meal.

Everyone was thrilled with my pie pincushions!  I am glad  because I worry that my work is not as strong as theirs, and I am always thinking it is not good enough.  But they loved the whipped cream dollop as much as I did!

So now I have to work on the 3rd Bonnie Hunter Clue.  I spent about 2 hours the other day trying to get the components to come to the correct size.  Remember that mine is slightly smaller than the pattern sizes due to my initial error in cutting out 180 of those silly pieces?

And I have to begin my Quilt the Swamp piece.  And I found out I need a piece for the March CFAL Show as well.

A Useless Post

This will be mostly a useless post.  I am going to tease you with stuff happening in the future.

I have been tagged by an artist friend, Juana from          who is not a quilter, to participate in an Around The World Blog Hop for Artists.  But this one has a twist to it.  It is seeking to look at the uniqueness of their work.  Since it is not specifically a "quilters" blog hop, i thought it would be interesting to toss my thoughts up the flagpole and see how they unfurl.

I will post in a few days and link back to the Blog Hop Group if you are interested in looking.  I am putting the finishing touches on it.

I had a very very very very (add about 20 more of these) exciting offer today from someone who has jumped up a level in the "blog friend" category, LOL.  I can't tell you about it, or who, but fit will be revealed in the future. It is a design thing.  Oh, my....there was never a second's hesitation on that reply!

I am working on my Bonnie Hunter multitude of blocks still.


And I have to start my Quilt the Swamp entry for January.  If any of you out there are considering
entering our Swamp exhibit, no fee and just ship to me so I can bring it in to be hung, PLEASE let me know.  I will have to find the info again, we sort of just talk about it here!

Theme this year is Metamorphosis and it needs to be Swamp in some sort of way.

What else?  Oh, DiNozzo's ear is in trouble.  The Boyz were in Frank's office looking out the window and .............what????????????????  A stupid cat walked by.  A black cat at that.  You know how they are bad luck and all?  He probably wanted to see my new front door!

Pretty bad luck for DiNozzo!  In the barking frenzy that ensued, his ear was damaged and part of the fur skin part of the underside tip was denuded, per se.  There was no blood, which was pretty unusual for an ear tip.  I am used to massive amounts of blood with ears like that.  And I didn't really notice it until last night.  I thought it was odd that everyone was walking up to DiNozzo and smelling his ear tip!

So that is being taken care of.

And I just ate Tiramisu to die for!  Homemade heaven! At Zotoona's.  Amazing food.  Like when I was in the Greek Isles!

Michael, Sally and Mary did a FANTASTIC job on this segment.  Makes me proud to rub shoulders with these talented people!

PS: this is a piece I did in 2006 taking a piece of black fabric and doing a sort of reverse discharge.  It was one of my earlier experiements with this technique.  Michael told me that the resulting red fabric was highly prized by dischargers and not always easy to get.

Quilt The Swamp on TV and a Reception

There is a Fiber Arts Show called Quilt THe Swamp at the Bluebonnet Swamp put on every January by Michael Young and his associates.  I usually have a piece in there, but this year was so complicated with Dutch and my mom and some other things that happened that I just didn't have the oomph to get anything together\r for the show.  This was the 10th Anniversary of this event, and has become a much anticipated show.  

The theme changes each year and has something to do with the swamp.  Some themes have been Midnight in the Swamp, Trees from the Swamp, The Swamp in 3-D, Photos from John Hartenak of the Swamp.  Always a lot of potential to do a piece for the show.

This year, as it was the 10th anniversary, Michael decided to do a recap of pieces from the last 9 years.  I couldn't even get my stuff together for that!  LOL.

Anyway, the point of the story is........as Frank says.....Michael Young, Mary Felder and Sally Gordon were interviewed by Louisiana: The State We Are In for viewing on Friday January 27 at 7pm.  It will reair on Saturday.  The station is one of the PBS locals.

 Michael also wants to make sure you know you are also invited to attend the reception this Sunday at 4 PM at the Swamp.  There will be finger food and most of the artists there to share stories and answer questions for you about their pieces.

It is well worth seeing if you have not already had the chance to get out there.   Bluebonnet Swamp is down Bluebonnet Avenue in Baton Rouge.  A fun outing as well because you can walk the trail system they have developed!
