Just How Many Dog Beds Do You Own?

I have spent all day cleaning.  The guest list for tomorrow keeps exploding.  We will certainly have a chance to test how the house and dogs handle a ton of people!   Tomorrow morning I will put the dinner together.  for those of you outside Louisiana, that means lunch.

I finally got that corner of my bedroom cleared out and organized for Sawyer's stuff.

The two biggest time taking tasks?

I got the vacuum cleaner out and moved all the furniture away from the walls and vacuumed up all the dog hair that clings to the baseboards.  The Roomba actually does a good job getting the wall clingers, but some of it hangs on to the underside of the furniture.  I purposefully bought furniture that has a high clearance so the Roomba can go underneath.  All gone now.

And I spent the whole day washing and drying dog beds.

One does not really know how many dog beds one owns until one decides to wash ALL the dog beds in one day.  I have already washed, dried and put back together the first four dog beds!

It sure does look like something exploded, doesn't it?

Bad Bad Dog and a Clean Clean Corner

I am better today.  My face looks zombie-fied though.

I had chocolate zucchini muffins for breakfast.  Now they are gone.......gone........gone.

McGee had the rest of them (9 to be exact) for lunch today.   McGee somehow pulled the bag down, I think he had help from the "big" dog.  DiNozzo is well known for his ability to reach stuff on the countertops.

They were good while they lasted.

And I got it into my head yesterday that I needed a bookcase bedside table.  The corner of my bedroom (on my side, not Frank's) is a mess.  So I looked online and decided to visit some stores today before I ordered online.

I was at Hobby Lobby for and ink pad when i looked up and saw this beauty at 30% off!

I wish i would have taken a before photo for you  to see what a fabulous, amazing, HUGE job I did.

Those pillow go on my bed and will eventually have a set of quilts to match them.  Eventually.....

And then I looked for a place to put the filing cabinet I had been using as my bedside table for the last 8 years. It was my place for all my Toastmaster stuff.  I was in Toastmasters for 22 years and had achieved every possible award and certification.  And I chaired 8 conferences, and so many Officer Training.  I was over 3 states and loved every minute!

But I tossed 4 recycle bin containers of paperwork.  Part of a past life now.

And I found $16 in the bottom of a drawer!  So I made money!

I need to find a new home for this baby.

And do you see the place the filing cabinet is?  I got in there and cleaned out about 7 boxes of stuff.  I was surprised to see that one thing was a tote bag full of Toastmaster stuff and another was a box full of stuff from when I was President of Sassi Strippers Guild!

That is how long that stuff has been sitting there.

Stash Report 7-19-15

(Happy Birthday Fayne!!!!!!)

We are meeting Dennis and Betty Jean for lunch.  Dennis wants the canoe and they agreed on terms.  So in order for them to come get it, I have been "company cleaning" for two days.  Isn't that the way you do it?

On most days I "regular clean" daily, trying to do something big in one room and something small in a lot of rooms.  Like I will clean the toilets and sinks and then set the roomba in the den and sweep the kitchen.  I feel that that can be rewarded with sewing the rest of the day.  Or going out to eat with a friend, or buying a new gadget for the kitchen or sewing room.

But when someone comes to the house, I "company clean".  That is more intense and involves pine oil and the big vacuum.  Sometimes I dust the surfaces in the rooms I think the people will be walking or sitting in.  I did that yesterday.

Today I swept, vacuumed and mopped the kitchen, den and front bathroom.  I deserve a new car for that!

Since I have been working on Carrie's girlfriend's baby quilt I have not been working much on mine.  I got all the old quilting out, and half of the quilt re-qilted.  Carrie came over yesterday morning and quilted the bottom half.

Get this.

She wanted to do the rest herself.  So I squared the quilt up and gave her abotu 15 minutes of instructions on how to do the binding and the blind stitch.  Then she left.   Back in the house, I realized she took my cutting mat, rotary cutter and two of my rulers.  The big square and the 6 x 24 rectangle.

Just like that.

She is so lucky.  I had to spend hundreds of dollars and hours of my time in classes andon books and equipment to understand what to do..  She thinks she can get the info in 15 minutes on the run ........WITH MY EQUIPMENT!

Sigh.......gotta love her!

Fear of Cleaning The Quilt Room

Danielle, my guru of great sayings, says today:

"What's keeping you stuck at square one?
What's blockading your greatness?
What's turning you in circles?

Fear of pain. That's it.

Most obviously, we fear painful events -- loss, humiliation, disconnection. But actually, what we might fear the most is awareness. What keeps us in a holding pattern is the fear of knowing more about our reality -- and having to act on what we know. "

I know she is talking about handling life events, but I can turn this to quilting very quickly.  My quilt room clean up.

How long have I been talking about it?  Two years?  Maybe not that long, but very close!  I really need to get in there, take everything out, and put it back in.  I am thinking that I would get a box and send some stuff to the guilds for their birthday tables, but I kinda like the stuff I bought.

I also feel I need to use it up before I go on to the quilt studio in the sky, because Carrie would send it all to Goodwill.  (If you see my obituary in the paper, call Frank to see if you can have some stuff before Carrie gets into it.)

I need to lose the fear of the painful event of taking everything out of the room and lining the hallway with my "junk", as Frank calls it.  (You see, he would be totally willing to let Carrie give it all to Goodwill.)  My quilty greatness is being blockaded by the stuff blocking my sewing machine.   I am unable to get to the fabric stuck in the corner because of the square one(s) piled up in the orphan box.  I have to keep turning in circles because there is no other way to get through the piles of stuff laying in the center of the room!

I am in a holding pattern of reality because I want to believe the Quilt Fairies will come and tidy things up overnight.  I guess Snow White can't spare them again this year.  I really wanted to wake up and see their fluttering wings moving and folding and spindling my fabrics into submission.

Sigh.

I guess Nike is right, I just have to do it!

Cleaning Day For the Sewing Chair

It is about time to clean the ole chair wheels again.  Even though it looks like I have fallen and can't get up, the chair is upturned so I can reach the wheels.

The wheels are FULL of thread.

And BATTING, too???????

and this is a pile from just one wheel.

And this is a pile from all five of the wheels.  A large pile of thread, tiny material pieces and batting.  All the detritus of sewing fine quilts.

I used every one of these tools, and could have used a few more!

Let's see what you can get out of your sewing room chair wheels.

Cleaning the Quilting Chair

This is one aspect of cleaning that I think most people don't think about.  Cleaning the quilting chair.  I am not talking about the seat or the back or arms of the chair, but the wheels.  I clean mine about every 3 or 4 months.

So you don't think about your wheels?  I suggest you stop right here and check them out.    You will be absolutely amazed at what you are going to see in there!

I will tell you how to clean them and what you will need to do so.  I can't tell you how to stop this from happening.  It is a by product of what we do.  We use thread, batting, material.  And our wheels pick up everything we use, like little round dark hard sponges.

Here is one of my before wheels.  It is not the worst one even.  But let's start with that one.

These are the tools of choice for me.  A small but sharp pair of scissors.  I like these because they have long but thin blades.  Did you know that in New Orleans where I grew up my grandmother would put a pair of scissors under your pillow if you could not sleep well.  I guess it was supposed to help you sleep somehow.  It is a wonder my hand is still intact, I sleep with my hand under my pillow.  But I digress.

A small but sharp pair of scissors with long thin blades.  A pick of some sort.  And some gripping tweezers.

Here is the second wheel I was working on.  There are five wheels on my chair, not sure why five is an improvement over four, but I have not fallen over in it yet.  Maybe that is why.

Take your small scissors and clip away as much of the detritus as you can.  Use your excellent tweezers to pull the thread masses out and away from the wheel.  My wheels never come apart but they do come off the chair so I did that to make myself more comfortable.  Of course DiNozzo had to get his nose in there to "help" me.  I moved him out about three times, finally gating myself in the room alone.

This is one of the remaining wheels.  See the batting in there?  How did I get batting in the wheel well?  No wonder my chair was not rolling well.

At some point you will need to get the big guns out.  Here are my big bubba thread pulling apparatus.  Aparati?  Aparatuses?  Flat nose pliers and needle nosed pliers.  Did you know that a pliers is a lever joined at a fulcrum?  And that pliers were used even before 3000 BC?  But I digress.

Use your big guns to grasp and pull parts of the thread and batting mass from the wheel wells.  You will need all your tools, the bigs and the littles, to complete this task so don't put anything away just yet.  Continue working the thread mass by loosening with the pick, clipping with the scissors,  pulling with the pliers, and picking with the tweezers.  Do this for several more hours because you have a chair with five wheels.

Here is a partially done wheel.  When you get to this point you will have to work patiently and carefully.  You will think you are winning, but you are not winning yet.  This requires a steady hand so don't go starting to pour your favorite adult beverage either.  Use your pick to loosen the fibers from the wheel shaft.  Use your scissors to clip what you can.  If your points are small on those scissors you can get way down into the mass and do some good clipping action.  This also goes for your tweezers.  If the points are meeting and actually gripping they will be your best friend here.

Sometimes all you get is a single thread, but it is really a good thing.  If you can get just one more, you are ahead of the end game.

This wheel actually looks clean and you will be tempted to stop here.  Yes, you can still see threads in there!  But if you spend just a few more minutes getting the threads out of the axle you will be rewarded with a chair that literally flies across the room with just a minimum of effort!  I did that and ran smack dab into my ironing board.  Luckily when the iron landed in my lap it had not been on.

Aha!  Clean at last.  You too can have five wheels looking just like this one.

Look at this thread mass. My mother would call it a rat's nest. I really don't think my hair ever did look like that, but that is what she would tell me all the time.

That thread mass is reward in itself.  Look at the colors in there.  And the pieces of fabric.  I'll bet you don't even remember all those fabrics.  Is that ribbon in there too?  Wow.

I love having a big mass of work product to show for all my effort.  Show yours when you get it done!

Happy Wheel Cleaning!

Everything Is Fair In War and Quilting

The battle rages on.  Piles of detritus are scattered everywhere.  Sharp metal objects are buried, then resurface.  Only to be buried once more under mounds of tiny fabric scrapnel.  Does this sound like your quilt room?  Hmmm.  Well, it is mine.  I need that MASH Unit in here, STAT!

I fight the battle on a daily basis to keep the room manageable and it never is.  I have begged Frank to let me move so I can box everything up and take it out in new surroundings, neatly put away for a few days.  He refused.  I guess we can't move every
 couple of months.

A couple of people over on the scrappy blog started talking about their sewing areas and taking pictures of these beautiful, neat, clean places.  Full of white fluffy clouds and floating fairies.  I was envious.  I have had that on two occasions.  It was marvelous.  But since I brought my mother's stuff in here it has been a total meltdown.  There just is not enough room to keep everything in one place neatly.  I purchased some stacking baskets that will help control the material.  I have been keeping the excess material in the shipping boxes they came in.  but that is not working, these baskets hold much more.

So today it looks like this and I will hopefully share with you some "clean and clear" photos later this week.

Right now most of my stuff is going out of the door via unauthorized personnel.   Sneaky little basset.

I will need a sentry guard to keep him out of here.
