The Haunted Toothbrush

We have a weird house.  It has always been weird.  It was built on pasture land 1 1/2 years before we bought it.

When we moved from Hammond to Baton Rouge 31 years ago, I was pregnant with Carrie.  Frank was never home, he had two positions at his company; managing the shop in New Orleans and his regular job as salesman in a 4 state territory.   I was by myself for days on the weekdays and often the weekends as well for maybe 3 years.   I had no friends since we were in a totally new city.  My Aunt and Uncle were the only family nearby and they helped me some with new Carrie and just being there as human companionship.

Being alone in a new city and new house with a new baby was no fun. And this house tested my being.

The house was really weird.  The kitchen cabinet doors would open all by themselves.  It would freak me out. The garbage disposal would sometimes shock me when I turned it on.  It never shocked anyone else.  So that freaked me out.

Over the years, really odd things would happen, like my rice would disappear from the pantry and turn up three days later on the counter.

Things still happen, we just accept that.   Unlike the Poltergeist in the movies, ours is not evil.  We have come to a sort of understanding relationship.

The last few days, the electric toothbrush turns itself on.  Sometimes during the day, sometimes in the middle of the night when we all all sleeping.    I now have a new electric toothbrush, the haunted one has been buzzing itself crazy on the carport for the last two hours.

It is trying to make a point.  It will run, then sputter like an old car, stop, and run some more.

Two  hours so far.  Like the Energizer Bunny.

My new one is super sonic.  So it might just be communicating silently with the other world on its own level.  Or maybe it is the beacon for some alien ship.

I keep waiting for the HandiQuilter to start quilting by itself.   Wouldn't that be nice?  Sometimes I put a quilt on the frame and leave it there for a day or so.

But I guess my ghostie is not artsy-craftsy.

Bricks

I don't know why I think I hate doing Applique.  I really do enjoy it  once I get in there doing it .  One of the bricks Fayne brought me was shaped like a house.  And I knew I had some  fabric that looked like tiny bricks.  It was perfect, just perfect!

But the morning was fraught with its own problems.   I must've knocked over one of my ironing water bottles because my floor was covered with water under the  ironing board.   And I lost my glue sticks somewhere along the way.  And until I can find it I can't finish covering the bridge with batting .

I guess what I need to do is to work on some of the other bricks until my glue sticks surface again.  Aughhh.......

I know, I know.  I need to just clean up my room for once and for all, and forget about just the little individual days that I go in there piddling around playing clean up.

Although, I guess good things want to finish for Shannon's daughter, Caitlynne

I will have to tell you about Shannon in another post.

The quilt is made from doilies that Frank's mother crocheted endlessly.   When we moved her from the house in Shreveport we had closets and closets of these things.  I made a very similar quilt for Frank's Aunt Emma after his mother died.  She was so glad to have something of her sister's since all their stuff had been lost in Hurricane Katrina.  I think Caitlynne will like having something her great grandmother made.
Sometimes these UFOs on my floor have a good purpose.  If I had thrown it out or just finished it and gave it away, I wouldn't have the connection for Caitlynne.

Yes, that is why it pays to be messy and unorganized!

Quilting on the House Quilt

Today I put together two more backs and put one of them on the frame.

I am digging deep into my UFO Quilt Top Box.

This one was from maybe 2006 or 2007.  I think it is Alex Anderson's pattern.  I tried googling her stuff, but I guess it is too old.

I never knew how to quilt it and just didn't feel comfortable with a simple meander on my Husqvarna machine.   It is fairly large and square.  I made the backing with some pink fabrics that were a dusky shade.  Most likely some of my mother's old stash.  It will make a nice girly quilt!1

I am going to do some fancy quilting on the house, like clapboard siding and bricks on the chimney.  And I think I need some flowers in the window boxes.

And some significant number of thread color changes.

This will be FANCY for me!  LOL

A Tour of My House Floors

Well, finally got the tile ordered and we are waiting for it to come in to schedule the installation.  We will do the installation in two phases.  I am not as energetic as PattyA is, David and his wonderful crew will do the total install.  I told Frank we could save a couple hundred dollars by doing the quarter round ourselves.  He looked at me, laughed and said, a couple hundred dollars of my time is way more valuable out servicing my customers!

So, I can sit back and eat bonbons while the crews work for me!  LOL.

David has done all the surfaces in my house since I met him 25 years ago.

Floors in my kitchen/breakfast area are pavers.

The formal dining room/quilting room is commercial carpet with a
marvelous vine.  Frank saw it in a hotel somewhere and loved it.

The den/hall is a deep maroon thick carpet that has lasted for 15 year and still looks good, despite the incredible amount of dog hair that it gathers daily!  I don't know why we actually have dog beds, they sleep on the sofa anyway.

The master bedroom is a beautiful cream carpet that is about 6 or 7 years old.  This is my reading/relaxing/getting away from everyone nook.  I am found there with two bassets slung across me. so much for getting away from everyone.  I had to look at why it looks grey around the dog's toy box.  That is sun coming in from the door to the back yard.  Odd looking, but the carpet is all the same color in there, really.

Frank's office is a thick blue carpet that makes him feel like he is on the
ocean.  Don't ask.  LOL.  It is because of the lighthouse theme in there...........just sayin'

You can see all the dust up there!  LOL. I don't dust, and I guess he doesn't either!  My wonderful housekeeper did that for 26 years for me.  And that is just a "few" of his lighthouses!

And my baths are the large ceramic tiles.

My foyer is an interesting thing.  It is the unofficial storage area for my
excess quilting stuff.  And i am slowly working to incorporate it in my studio.  I wanted a center design and looked for months to fine just the right one.  When I showed it to the tile guys the day they came to lay the foyer tile, the supervisor had a horror struck look on his face.  It seems he thought it was the sign of the devil and could not work in this house.  I assure you it is just tile!  LOL.  I do no satanic rituals in there, although there are a few people who might think otherwise!

The studio is Carrie's old bedroom.  When she moved out, and I was sure she was not coming back.........LOL..........I took it over.  She designed the cabinetry and cutting table and Frank built it.  I have Pergo laminate in there that was leftover from when we did the rent house.  Carrie and I laid that in both the rent house and the studio.  It is the only room David has not done for us.  And I love it because my office chair flies over the wood like a speedy
race car (when the wheels are clean!)

So the  den/hall/master bedroom will soon be the dark long tile on the left in the sample.  The top right piece is exactly the color of all the wood in the den.  I felt it would look like a bowl if I put that in there.  Carrie said, go darker mom, darker.  So I did.  When I called her and told her I have a southwestern rug picked out for the room, I could hear a sharp intake of breath as she held her tongue.  But I am sure her eyes rolled far back into her head!

LOL.  Gotta love that girl!  I can see her eyes rolling as I type!

Come Trick Or Treat At My Halloween House!

My very latest finish
Come, my pretties, and trick or treat at my Halloween House during the Wicked Blog Hop!  (insert cackling laugh here!)  This is my day to show you into the Wicked Realm of Howl-o-ween ..... Hound Style!

We love Halloween at my house.  And now that we have no daughter at home, we just decorate the porch. This year I will be in Houston at the International Quilt Festival on Halloween.  So Frank will be giving out candy, so don't think you can do tricks at my house and steal my vicious guard hound......

For my Wicked block I thought I would give you a Halloween House.  I love to do paperpiecing and found this wonderful house at FaveQuilts . Wouldn't it be fun to do houses for every holiday?  Hmmm.  You need to print the four pattern pieces before you begin.  If you know how to change the size of the printed pieces you can change the size of the house.  I printed my pieces to end up 8.5 x 8.5 inches unfinished.

Choose your fabrics to bring out the scariest emotions in your house.  I found this perfect sky in my stash.

Cut the fabric to cover the area of the sky making sure the fabric extends over the paper by more than a quarter of an inch.  I have an Add A Quarter ruler that helps make sure I have enough seam allowance on my pieces.

Here is the sky and the roof and a chimney.  Deep in my stash, I found bricks for the chimney (she says proudly).

Iron all your seams each time you sew.  This makes it lie flat.  This is what the back looks like, simple seams.

And this is the front side.  Nice and precise.

Here are the window and the door.  I choose some fabrics that I could fussy cut and have this very surprised looking cat.  I guess he is amazed to find that he is sharing his house with bats and a crazy pumpkin man.

Tear the paper off the back and put the roof on the house.  A house needs a roof!  Even the Halloween House!

See how the waxing moon is in the starry sky over the house?  Will you come trick or treating at my Halloween House this year?

McGee the Howl-o-Ween Hound
Watch out for that vicious guard Hound!

Check out the rest of my cronies at the Wicked Blog Hop!
