Shingles Shots and Hurricanes

While it is not expected (at the moment) to turn into a Tropical storm Sally. And they are thinking that Mobile will get 4 inches of rain. The place we are heading is just before Mobile in Mississippi.  So we are rethinking that last thing we want to do is to head into an unfamiliar area with a ton of rain, sewing machines with no electricity and having to evacuate. Sigh.......worst case scenario for sure, right?

So if you have not already, go out and get your shingles shots.  Heigle, my eye specialist guy, said I needed to us this time to get all my ducks in a a row.  I don’t want to get the cornea replacement and get shingles again.

So I went to an immunologist and we discussed how to do it with the meds I need to be on. I had a steroid pack for the Bells Palsy so I have to be out of that for 30 days,

.  And I can’t take the valtrex for two weeks after I get any vaccine and I just had the flu shot. Things will overlap and I will get the first shingles shot in two weeks. Geez....

I have two sets of eye drops and 7 other meds including my thyroid and sleep and anxiety and allergy meds. Oye!  It is a chore just keeping up with what I take, when, what I have to discontinue, what I have to restart......

Just get your shingles shot!

  3. I didn't need any persuading. Both my Mom and my best friend had Shingles, and watching them go through it made me get the original Shingles vaccine a few years ago. At my last physical my doctor told me to get the new one, so I did. I am sure you know that the vaccine takes two shots, so sorry Glen, but you'll have to go through all that rigamarole when it comes time for you to get the second. Good luck with the hurricanes. I think of you every time I hear the weather guys talk about them.

  4. I, too, think of you every time serious storms form in the Gulf. And now I'm worrying about friends who live near Portland. DH has had his shingles shots (his mom had shingles twice - NOT good). I am scheduled to get mine later this year (part 1).

  5. It's a lot to keep track of. I do this everyday for Terry. He has had shingles twice. Neither he nor I can get that shot because of Terry's weakened immune system due to his RA meds. Fingers crossed neither of us get it. Me first time nor his third. Keeping you in my thoughts that this goes well for you.

  6. Hope the hurricane peters out to nothing. So apparently if you get shingles you are not immune to it since it sounds like several people commented they got it twice. Sounds like you really have some planning to do in order to squeeze in the vaccination.

My arm was so sore after I got my first shingles shot on Saturday. I had never had that kind of reaction to any shot before. By late Sunday my arm was felling better and now (Monday) it is just a bit sore if I rub it hard. I was tired this weekend too even though I got plenty of sleep. That could have been the shot too. Oh well, it is better than having shingles! I go for my second shot in November. At least I will know what to expect.
