Oops! I Lost Our Correspondence!

My mother has been in the nursing home for over 3 years now with end stage Alzheimer's.   She is mostly non-responsive and gets just enough nourishment to keep her 85 lb body going somehow.  The first year at $4400-something plus supplies and services drained every penny she had to her name.  My brother told me not to expect anything from him and I could not support that amount myself so I made the decision to apply for Medicaid for her.

It is a double edged sword.  But that is another story.

So for 2 years now she has had no assets and no income except for the meager Social Security payment from the government from my father's account before his death in 1989.  Not much at all.  But it keeps her in hair dos and manicures in the Nursing Home Shop and gets her a few ice cream cones during the month.  It makes  her feel good to get her hair done.  I guess.

So  this year the IRS says to me, you can't sign her tax returns, she needs to sign them.  to which I replied, I have a power of atty that allows me to do so.  To which they replied, they don't accept POAs.

Wow.  Then they can just go to the nursing home and see if she can sign her own name, if she even remembers it. They weren't happy about that.

So now, for the NSA's benefit and the IRS's record, if the NSA would be kind enough to pass it along, I had a computer glitch and all our past correspondence has disappeared.

Sorry.  Sometimes stuff just happens, to quote Lois Lerner.

  1. I don't know anything about Medicaid and how it works. I don't know what to say about all of this except the government has infiltrated our lives too much.

  2. I agree with Patty. Our government is not to be trusted and they're really not concerned about us, who pay their bills, but concerned only about their own agendas. I won't get started about all that here but pray for continued strength for you in dealing with mother's situation.

  3. It is really difficult having a parent with Alzheimer's. Been there. And government can be so frustrating. I even call the income tax people bad names on a regular basis.
