Here is an interesting progression of the height of the Mississippi river at Baton Rouge over two months. all this time we’ve been over flood stage period the official flood stage is 35 feet and we’ve been well over that for weeks now. The Mississippi doesn’t affect localized flooding because the levees were built to hold water to the level of the 1927 Flood at 47 feet.
The Corps of Engineers are opening the Bonnie carre Spillway for the unprecedented second time in one year. Following back to back years which has never been so e before the Spillway has only ever been opened 13 times in its history. Check out my earlier posts about the Bonne Carre History.
This is the river on March 27, then Apr 24 and today may 11. You can see the river level rise, fall then rise again. Today it is at 43 feet , give or take a few inches.
We got rained on while walking down the levee back to the truck. It is not local rain that drives the river level but the snow storms on the upper Mississippi River Valley, and there has been massive snows up North.
Too much water!
ReplyDeleteI saw this on the news and thought of you. Our water in Iowa is up again, we had a full day of rain, so it's sent our river up again. They haven't fixed my gravel road, probably won't until the fall now.Take care,
ReplyDeleteI have had 1.1" of official rain this month but it sure seems like it has been more than that. It has been a very wet spring. All that water has to go somewhere. The Mississippi sure is high.
