Photo Shoot With the Pumpkin Quilt

When I saw Mary at the quilt meeting last night with her Zombie Quilt, I realized that in another week it will be Halloween.  And that on Friday Carrie and Andrew will be moving into their new house!

It made me want to go out an do a photo shoot with my Buggy Barn Pumpkin Quilt.  So I did.

This is what happens when you put anything on the ground at my house.

McGee has a full range of activities.  He itches.

He contemplates. 






He chews and gets yelled at.

And he plays innocent angel.

The sun makes it look like the pumpkins are glowing!

The pumpkins are made from assorted oranges.  Some are shirts from the Purple Cow an some are fat quarters from long ago.

The Candy Corn Border is scraps an was actually easy to paperpiece.

I love this quilt.

Buggy Barn Dogs

I need to call them something else but that has described them for a long time now.  Pointer Pups, maybe.

I saw a quilting design on one of the modern quilts and thought to copy it.  I snapped the photo into my iPad and used it to practice on some pads of paper.  When I was comfortable with the design, I sat at the machine.  Bam, busted a needle.

I didn't have a needle for that machine so I used a Schmetz Universal.  Hey, doesn't work.  After 4 frustrating attempts, changing thread, changing bobbin, changing the feet, I gave up and brought out my Husqvarna from the sewing room.

Here is one of the dogs yet to be sandwiched.


I did wide double loops all over in a random pattern.  After I finished, I looked at the picture and saw where the quilter had put three of these loopies in a group so that it looked sort of like a flower or leaves.

Oh well, I like the really modern look of the quilting.  It matches perfectly with the modern colors and the modern dogs.

If you want to try the double loopies, definitely practice first.  After all the frustration with the needle, I found I forgot to look at which direction I started the looping.  It matters because you come out of the loops headed to an already quilted area or an open area.  So about half way through I began stopping and thinking about which way I needed to go.  It was a good lesson.

I guess Buggy Barn is not really modern, go with me here.

One thing I did not do is to take the whole quilt picture for Anne of the Desert.

Two full days of quilting, can you believe it?

 

Yes, my friends, two full days of mostly nothing but quilting!  Friday I spent the day at friend Norma’s wonderful quilt HALL.  Yes, it is a huge beautiful quilt room.  Paula and I toted our machines and the fabrics we had already swapped and lined up for the Pumpkins.  After a brief lesson on Buggy Barn techniques we were off to a rocky start.  For those of you  familiar with the Buggy Barn slice and put back together way of doing things, know it is not for the precision quilter.  When sides did not match, both of my buddies had heart attack moments.  But once the first pumpkin was completely put together, they were very impressed because neither thought it would really work.  Here we are, happy that it pumpkins are being created !

And my day was not over yet.  In order to buy myself some quilt time I had to agree to a ballgame that night.  I am not the sports person.  Never have been interested in watching it done.  So here I am in some of the best seats in the Alex Box Stadium on the LSU Campus right behind home plate where you could see everything.   For those who aren’t familiar with LSU baseball, they are 7 time National Champions, and Paul Mainieri’s Tigers are ranked #7and are 14:1 right now.  This game was with Cal State Fullerton and they were ranked #6.  My dear and wonderful friend Ann and her family has had season

 

 

 

 

 

tickets to these games since the dawn of time.  The stadium, complete d in 2009, is truly beautiful.  Seating 9200 people it is sold out game after game, and Friday was no exception.  Here are some pics from the night.  The guy tossing the first ball out is the famous ex-football coach now Athletic Director Skip Bertman.

And I did say TWO days of quilting, right?  SO today I was in charge of the Sew In at St Paul’s Church.  (The key did NOT melt in my hands---so there!)  And Valerie and I finished the top of the quilt with her dad’s flannel PJs and T-Shirts.  And I finished up with my pumpkins so we got a ton of stuff done!
