Several Culinary Wins!

I finally got the date for the cooking class that was cancelled by the storm last week.  Lisa finally has power again, but she was one of the last to get it back.

The Menu will be:

Raspberry “Mom-Mosas”,
Savory Cheddar Waffles with Creamy Scrambled Dill Eggs & Avocados,
Stone-Ground Grits with Roasted Tomatoes,
Strawberries with Praline Cream

Sounds wonderful, doesn't it?

Along with some friends we were able to score a table in one of the hardest places to get into.  The Velvet Cactus.  It is a fantasitcal place with incredible LA-Mex food.  The best Sangria, even better than I make!  I had tacos with jalapeno cream, enchiladas with shrimp and pesto and plantains!

Now my next conquest will be to get into The Rum House.   It is Caribbean based Louisiana cuisine.  I have heard it is wonderful but difficult to get into like the Velvet Cactus.

And today, Frank and I hit Dairy Queen after the Hibiscus Show for the chili cheese dog and sweet iced tea!  Can't get better than that!

There are some 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners among the general population of those offered to the judges.
This was one of the Grand Champion winners, in the single petal category.

This was one of my favorites.  When have you ever seen a beige flower?

This is a double or triple flower.  The colors were gorgeous.

The yellows were incredible as well.   I wanted to buy this one but I really don't have a place for it right now.

This was the Best In Show Grand Champion bloom!  Looks like velvet.

Two Of My Pieces Are Hanging! Yay!

It is so amazing to see your work hanging.  CFAL (Contemporary Fiber Artists of Louisiana) hung
My Iguana
our annual exhibit of fiber art at the Louisiana State Archives Building on Essen Lane (in Baton Rouge) last week.

It comes down before the end of the month, so if you want to be a good friend, stop in and see it!  The building is not open on weekends, but is open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm M-F.

It is called The Art of Fiber II.

My Hibiscus
I am going to put a photo of Tracy's piece as well, I need to make sure she is OK with it.  I am sure she will be.  It is an incredible piece.  She is so talented.  She puts just the right piece of fabric in the exact right place.  How she does it, I will never know.
Tracy's piece is at least 3 feet by 3 feet

And Michael has a red piece that is so amazing.  His talent is beyond anyone I know.  He should be in huge galleries, maybe one day he will be.

And I am sure Tracy will be right there next to him!

My Iguana was done for a challenge by River City Guild.  It was to take a block, change it up several ways and make something with it.  This was like in 2007.  The petroglyphs you see are made from a black solid piece, not a Kona though.  I used a bleach pen to discharge the rock painting replicas.  It is backed using the birthing method.  I was surprised it turned so  sharply and maintained its shape like it did.

I made the decision to do something besides a quilt, because everyone was doing quilts.   I thought it would stand out.  Well, it did.  They HATED it!

My Hibiscus is an applique technique I learned in a Quilt University Class.  It was totally different from anything I have ever did because it is worked from the back of the piece.  It is a precise technique that gives excellent results without all the needle turning and wax paper cutting.  You still need to mark off your pattern and enlarge it, but it makes a really nice piece.

Off the Wall Friday

Don't forget to send me suggestions of a good mid range sewing machine I can tote around to classes and retreats.

I keep forgetting about Off the Wall Friday.  Nina Marie!  I signed up for the design class by Elizabeth Barton!  Yes, I am so excited!  It is just what I need and want.

The next Challenge in the Fiber Group is to interpret Fifty Shades of Grey.  Since I have decided not to read the book, I googled the title and learned a lot..........OK, back now.

I thought I would do a black background, various shades of grey leather, and the pink fuzz from my 40th Reunion tiara.  Oh, and a piece of chain.

That should do it.

Meanwhile, I am working on a pattern for Judy M of Mo and Mike.  It is one of the new ones coming out and I am doing a bit of testing for her.  It needs the binding, but I really like it.  But I did put the flower on upside down.  And a few have noticed!

Hop on over to Nina Marie's place and see what the others are working on today.
