More Leaves and a Bit of Coffee

I have been having coffee at all hours of the day and night.  Tonight we went out for dinner and it started raining.  I was freezing in the restaurant.  Then we headed to Target to pick peaches and a turkey breast for dinner tomorrow night, I was freezing in the store.  (Turkey Breast and Sweet Potato Puree).  Sounds good, right?

So to warm up Frank had Pumpkin Spice Cappuccino and I had Apple Pie a la Mode coffee!  Ah-ma-zing!

Earlier this afternoon while it was threatening to storm and hail golf balls and form tornado winds (it never did actually), I quilted several more blocks.  This row is smaller than the first row of leaves I did.

So I did these guys, but only the background and I got a call from CAAWS.  So that ended that!

It looks Ah-ma-zing too!

These 4 blocks have the background complete but I need to do the leaves.  I started one of them, and that phone call came.

This one needs to be rolled down to be completed, but I thought I would get the jump on the bottom half!

So I guess I can't figure the completion percentage until I finish the green leafy portion.

Hey, I am going to figure it anyway............and tomorrow it will be already done!

When I finish the 4 leaf blocks it will be 25.8%.

You know, I think I had named this quilt Leaf Me Alone.  What do you think about that?

Channeling Patty A

I felt today like I was channeling my friend Patty the Quilt Lady.  She loves to create these large quilts from improv pieced blocks that turn out to be incredible pieces with very dense quilting.  And it lays totally flat even!

Since she works full time she quilts in the odd groups of time available in bits and pieces.  So it may take a while for her to finish a big quilt.

She will announce her percentage of completion with each post.  36% complete...........42% complete.......79% complete.  Following her progress is actually FUN!

My leaf quilt is pretty large, although I don't have the measurements at the moment. And it has 31 blocks, I think I counted correctly.  I was trying to count it on the longarm frame.  It sounds weird to have an odd number doesn't it?  But they are improv blocks made by a group of 12 people, and I filled in some number of them along with improv settings.

I have fully completed 4 blocks.

So as of today, I am 12.9% complete!

Geez, it looks way worse saying that than just having 4 blocks done............

Look how skinny I am........

I am linking up with Nina Marie's Off the Wall Friday.  One of my pledges this year is to participate in that great site more.

This was at the Modern Guild Meeting Show and Tell.  Look how skinny I look here.  I need to buy me a black door and just carry it around with me!

I  bought me a thimble.  I did extensive research to find what I should buy.   I know all the rage is the Roxanne thimbles.  This one was $6.50 and I got to have lunch with a good friend and visit with a few people at Daisy's Quilt Cottage.

Or Cottage Quilts.  I think.  Which ever it is, I got a new thimble.

And I wanted to show you one of the Corner Quilts that I actually like.  I love it.  Sometimes Corner Quilts Rule!!

Can you see the elephants in the backing?  I love me some elephants!!!

I plan on quilting a different background in each leaf block.  When I took it to the Quilt Haus I had sticky tabs on most of the blocks with the choice of background.  Now I  have to redo the tabs!

This quilt is the culmination of a project I did with a group of about 10 or 12 peopl  e from across the world.   We  would teach something, and everyone would use that technique and send you a block.  I taught  them how to do a curved seam.  If  you look closely, not everyone played along and did curved seams.  In fact, those people whined alot and did applique.

Regardless, I just love the quilt.  It is totally me!

So You Like History? And A Stash Report

I am glad you enjoyed the history of early Louisiana.  If I remember, I will check out some fun things later on and share them with you.  I thought it was an innovative presentation for a quilt guild.   great program may be to share a block and its history each month and end up with a quilt!

All I used this week was the borders on the Fireworks quilt to the tune of about 1/3 yard.  Oh, and I put a 4 inch sleeve on another quilt, Jack and Gourdy Throw A Party, that got into the quilt show.  But that put me over the 100 yard used mark and that was my goal!  Yeay!

Used this week -0.83 Used this month -17 Used this year -100.33
Bought this week 0 Bought this month 0 Bought this year 67.25
Plus or minus -0.83 Plus or minus -17 Plus or minus -33.08

I had several meetings this week, two guilds and  a CAAWS board meeting so i was plenty busy with preparations.  I just don't want you to think I was slacking off or anything.

Carrie came over yesterday.  And we put her leaf quilt on the frame thinking we could get it at least quilted before she went to the shower today.  I showed her how to work with rulers and we planned on a background filler for the negative space.

At about an hour, she  popped under the quilt to see what it looked like.

OMG

That is all I can say.  It didn't even occur to me that I might need to tweak the tension after it got serviced.

So we spent the next three hours ripping out what the machine put in.  And I spent most of today and I am not even half done

OMG

 But it looked great!

Leaf Me Alone!

WOW!  It finally got here, my day for the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop.  It seemed so exciting when I signed up for it.  Leaves, all leaves!  And I do so love leaves.
My leaf is called Leaf Me Alone and was done as part of a group two years ago.  I chose a pattern and they all made me their interpretation of my suggestion.  The leaves I got back were WILD!  I put them together in a quilt top a year ago and there they sit, beside my quilting machine ready to be quilted.  Soon......yes, soon.
After you have finished looking at my tutorial on making my leaves, you can check out the other wonderful fellow participants at:

I have a curved piece tutorial for you. Most people are terrified of curves but they are really easy if you give them an open minded try. And if you don’t do well the first time, just toss it, no quilt police will know!
Get over your fears and try something new! It took me three or four leaves to get any good at the process, so don’t think I aGlenLeaves2m really special! You will probably do better than I did because you are more patient and a slower sewist than I am! I do things fast and fearlessly.
I created a quilt with curved pieced green leaves from blocks I taught as part of a block swap several years ago.  I love its randomness and will get it quilted one day!
Here’s what you do.
Go find yourself some scraps of fall leaf colors! You can tos10scraps gathereds in just a few accent colors too maybe. And let’s try some curves.
Gather up your fall colors. You will need a neutral background for this leafy challenge. Neutral-ness is up to you, however! I used muslin square about 14 inches by 14 inches.
12 french curveLet me say up front, this is not a precise piecing type block. Sometimes you don't really know how large the block or the leaf  will end up to be. Think Buggy Barn technique. I have a French Curve and find it easy to shape and use as a cutting template. If you use this to cut with be aware that your fingers have no protection, so use a cutting glove or don’t cut close to the curve. Don’t cut yet, keep reading.
I found that large pieces and gentle curves are easier to work with than smaller ones at first. Start 11 sew togetherout with your leaf fabrics and sew them together to get a nice bit of fabric.  Cut a leaf shape about 12 or so inches long. Make the curve gentle. Gentle curves are so easy to work with when you 12 same for other side are learning. You can get fancy-dancy later. Cut the leaf in half. Either curvy or straight. I did my first two straight. Hunt in your scraps to find the leaf's spine. Sew it together --- oops! No thread in the machine!
Oh no, I was so excited I got ahead of myselfcindy, I didn't make the veins! If you want veins, take a leaf side and whack off a piece across the half in a straight line. Add a zinger piece to the bottom of your leaf segment. Sew. Do it again. Maybe even again! Trim the leaf half so it can be sewn back to the first piece. You should now have your leaf with veins. OK, let’s put it into a neutral background.
13 add stemChoose a fabric to be the leaf stem.  i used a 2 1/2 inch strip of a dark color to set it apart so it could be seen.  Black would also be good here, or a dark brown.

Add the stem to the two leaf sides and join, to make a whole leaf.
  14 sew together

The background should be larger than you want the final block to be, I  made mine about 14 inches. Lay the background right side up and  141 lay on bkg squareplace the leaf right side up on top of the background where the leaf will end up. This is where a French curve or a flexible curve will work but I just use a ruler edge.

I carefully move the 142 cut curveedge of the ruler along the edge of the leaf 143 continue cut curvekeeping the rotary blade against the ruler while I cut the same  exact curve in the background as in the leaf.

144 curve cut 146 registration marks

Make a couple of registration marks by placing a pin at a recognizable point on both the leaf and the background.
147 lots of pins Fold the leaf back over the background so the right sides are together at the registration point. Pin. Some people use hundreds of pins, some use just a few strategic pins and some don't use any. Sew slowly making sure fabric edges meet.
I put a few pins at strategic points and use a tweezers to hold 148 smooth seamthe two pieces even as I sew.  Sew with the background on top and be careful not to stretch  the bias.  Move only a few stitches at a time and adjust the fabric edges often.  If you work carefully here your curve will be perfect!
 150 open up
Open out and press and you have it half done. See!  It actually works!

151 press out
Do the same for the other side making sure your first cut for t160 cut curve for othe sidehe curve has both the background and  the leaf right side up.  (Smile, check it again to make sure!)

146 registration marks
You will have to sew the two remaining open seams by folding161 sew the same way the background over on itself and sewing away from the block to the outside edge.  You can add stems or branches if this block will be connected to a “tree”.

Press. Trim to the desired size and Voila! You have a leaf! These are so fun!
DSC08892 With curved piecing, your leaf will be beautiful! Try some small leaves, fat leaves, skinny leaves or some really odd leaves! They are soooooo addicting
I hope this was enlightening. If you have any questions, please let me know. It I wasn’t clear enough about the curve piecing you can find a number of tutorials on the internet using the various techniques.
And I have the perfect words for the bottom of the quilt! LEAF ME ALONE!
Don’t cha just love it???!!!
Now you should visit my Leaf Buddies and see the leaves they have prepared for you.

To Do List for Today

Not that I will get everything done, but I wanted to make a to do list for today.  Most of it involves sewing something, so it is good for you to see this.  And I want you to all marvel at how "organized" I am, at least for this morning.

I have for a long time, wanted to make pouches for each of the machines I have.  I want to have all the accessories and necessary items for each machine in a kit of sorts.  but I have never gotten around to making them.  I have developed a nice idea that each machine should be color coded and thus, all its stuff will make it back into the right pouch.  Or like, if I am going to a retreat and want to bring a specific machine, I can just pick up the right color pouch and have ALL the stuff I need.

Not that it has ever happened before that I actually have all the stuff I need when I go to a retreat.  Everyone knows that I have a great husband who has no problem bringing whatever I need, provided he can find it in my very messy and totally unorganized quilt room.  He has even brought stuff for OTHER people.  He is just that nice of a guy.

1.  I need to make three color coded pouches large enough to hole a whole set of stuff for each machine.

I am doing three blog hops.  One of which will be when I am on a retreat in two weeks.  So I need to have everything set up for that one, and the next one at least begun and scheduled.

2.  Do the tutorial for Leafs Me Happy for my post and link to the tutorial.  I have it completed, I just need to make my leaf in fall colors to comply with the theme.  Not a problem as they are pretty easy to do!  And I love them.

Betty Jean called me yesterday and asked if I could make a quilt for her little girl who is going to turn 2 in a couple of months.  LOL.  She is good, she didn't call me the week before!  I made the baby girl a quilt when she was born and she takes it everywhere!  I love it.  That is the perfect quilt!
Maylee back

Maylee's Baby Quilt
I have some ideas but I don't have her email address.  I did give her mine, and ask her to send me some of her ideas that she likes, but I have not heard from her yet.  I am chafing at the bit wanting to get started on something for her.  And I just had the idea to include one of her shirts and one of Dennis' shirts as well!  My, am I smart or what?
The picture was taken 7-11

3.  Get Betty Jean's email and exchange some baby quilt ideas with her.

I have this blue jean quilt, remember that?  I bought some red cotton to quilt it with but I have not been able to find that stuff anywhere.  So I guess it is time to buy more, it has been nearly 7 months now.  Maybe more than that.  Yep.  Maybe I need to section it to make two quilts.  This was only 4 pairs of blue jeans and the infamous dockers Frank asked me if I could do anything with.  See that hilarious story here.

4.  So I need to head to Hobby Lobby or Joann's to get red perle cotton for hand quilting.

The stupid cute little boy dog McGee rolled in something dead two days ago.  Frank stood there and laughed at him, positioning his shoulder to get maximum coverage.  And I mean dead like in Casey Anthony's trunk dead.  Boy did he smell bad.  I washed him off with some antibacterial spray from the kitchen.  No good.  I took kitchen detergent and washed him up and down his back.  No good.

Then I took some Nature's Miracle Dog Shampoo designed to get out the most stubborn basset smell, and it was no good even!  So about every 6 hours I wash him down with something else.  This morning he is  better.  But the remnant of the smell occasionally wafts in my direction.  He thinks he smells wonderful.  As does DiNozzo, he keeps going over to McGee and smelling up and down his back.  Two peas in a pod, those two are.  I am sure the REAL DiNozzo would be making fun of poor McGee by now.  Maybe he is, you never know what dogs are saying to each other.

5.  Wash McGee.  Again.

I need to cook tonight.  Chicken.  We had meat loaf for the last two days so I need chicken now.  I am thinking something Mexican, maybe chicken enchiladas.  I ate the sour cream I bought for it when I ate the flat pretzel chips the other day.  It was good and I kept saying, only one more, I need this for the enchiladas........you know how that goes.

6.  Take chicken out to defrost.  And put my recipe up for you to enjoy.  And ge more sour cream.

I am sure there is more, but if I don't get out and do some of this, the day will be gone.

More Exciting Newsy News!

Did you happen to notice the Blog Hops on the side of my blog over there?  Well, check them out!

The first will be the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop.  If you are unfamiliar with Blog Hops read on.

A blog hop is a group of blogs gathered together who create a block around a theme and present it on a given day.  This one is huge.  Like over 100 blogs participating.  There will be tutorials, prizes, giveaways and wonderful new blocks and techniques for you to try.  It is all exciting.

I think the Dots Blog Hop is going on right now.  And they just completed the Bowls Blog Hop.  Quilting Buddy Charlene did that one and showcased her family tree bowls with the bowls stacked in family groups with names!  Too cute!

I will have a tutorial for my Leaf block that will air on October 8.  There will be 11 of us showing that day so you can literally "hop from one blog to the next" and take it all in.

I am excited because it will introduce you to a lot of new people who have exciting ideas to share with you.  I am also excited because I get to showcase my wonderful Leaf block to a ton of peoples!

Leaf Me Alone!

June is my month for the virtual bee over at BumbleBeans' 15 Minute Play.  I love all the blocks I have made so far for the others in the Virtual Bee there.  And I knew I would have to think outside the box to get something equally spectacular for my month.

I decided on leaves.

But that necessitated giving some instructions on curved piecing.

So if you want to see the technique I used, hop on over to http://www.15minutesplay.com/2011/05/june-scrap-bee-block-from-glen.html
