 Not sure what we are seeing, but this one might have had some mold.  Most likely toxic black mold!

 I cut the holes in it before I wrapped them to see what it would do.

I might need to fray them some more.

EcoBundle 1 Reveal

 (I don't know what happened to my post.....I posted pics and all this morning!)  Oh well, lets try again.

After tumbling in the dryer for a while last night, they slept together in the dryer.  It was not planned to happen, but I forgot to get them out.

So this is what they look like in the morning......which by the way is better than I look in the morning.

I think I need to do this in two posts.  So look for both of them.

This is silk, remember.

EcoBundle 1 and 2 UnWrapped

OK, It has been a month and a half.  That is 5 weeks longer than Carol's!  LOL  Hers turned out lightly stained.  I resisted and resisted and resisted.  But about 10 pm last night I decided I just HAD to go outside in the dark and retrieve my EcoBundles.

I was richly rewarded.

If you remember, there were two bundles.  I wrapped them with cotton twill tape and lovingly placed them outside in the side garden after McGee continued to dig  them up  in the back yard.

 In one I put organic stuff like a handful of soil, some acorns and berries, some leaves and bark all wrapped around a piece of rusty re-bar.

 This is the original stuff I put into Bundle 1.  Just that hodgepodge of organic stuff and some rust.  See that bolt?  Cool!


I wonder what stains will stay in when it gets washed.  I thought it might smell bad so I was sort of prepared for this, tonight is garbage night.  But  it was just musty. 







The second one contained some beets, some orange slices, some avocado and onion skins, wrapped around a rusty re-bar piece.

Here is what it looks like before and after. 

All those vegetables sort of decayed and molded so I think some of the patterning is attributed to mold.


Keep in mind, the after photos are both wet.  So they will be a bit lighter upon washing and drying.

I put both in the washer and they are now rolling around together in the dryer........getting all hot and bothered.

Ohhhhh.........what good things can you see made from these babies?

Eco-Dying and Eco-Bundles

My eco-bundles are still sitting, wrapped and waiting.......nannie nannie boo boo!  Carol HAD to take hers up and open them.  I have to admit that I was REALLY tempted to rush out and open them.  Hers look amazing.

So in lieu of opening an eco-bundle I was going to take some silk and dye with those acorns that were boiled and have been sitting and mulching.  Or whatever the term is, waiting and leaching their brown-y goodness to impart to my silky fabric.

And this is what I found.  I was NOT a happy camper.  Franks SWEARS it was not him.  He blames it on critters.......I might need a critter hunt.  Where are the cats when you need them?



It must work well, it stained the concrete.  The non stained photo is the exact same concrete on the other side of the garage door.

and we have had two days of some serious rain and a couple of days of sun that beats on that space all day.

I  stuck a piece of silk in the dregs of what was in there. 

We shall see what happens with my silk.

Eco-Bundle Red

I put a second eco-bundle together this afternoon using the same silk and

beets (should do well as it totally stained my hands)

onion skins (they were white onions so I am not sure what that will do)

blood oranges  and avocado skins.

Yes, I had to eat two avocados for art's sake.........

And I took my walnut shells and acorns, beat them into submission with a meat beater and put them into a pot to boil.  They are not sitting outside "steeping". 

Them immediately turned a nice dark brown.......

Lots of nice happy things happening. 

If you take the center of the acorns and dry them, then grind them, you can make a very bitter flour that is edible.

Interesting stuff.

Eco-Bundle (continued)

So you think I joke about McGee and how bad he is?  Here he has dug up the mummy bundle already and it has not been in the flower pot for 5 hours.

I just happened to walk out and saw it laying there.

That is my eco-bundle, not doggy poop!

I really didn't think he saw me bury it.  But I guess that and his excellent nose beat me out.

Aughhh!  He also tore up the renewal post card for my Machine Quilting Magazine.  He is just lucky I could renew online.........

Eco-Bundling

I have some silk from a while back, for some project long forgotten.  So I thought to use it for my Eco-Bundle.  So what is an eco-bundle and why would you do it?

Because!

And Eco-Bundle is a piece of natural fabric wrapped up with a bunch of natural objects like leaves, nuts, rusty things.  And you  know how much I love rusty things!

I started with that piece of silk.  Found things like:

Oak leaves and some walnut and gum leaves.

magnolia leaves and a seed pod.

Dirt.

Some purple wandering jew leaves.  The freeze got them so they are in the process of drying up.

 Here is everything laid out on the silk piece.  And some St John's Wort tea that is dried. 








I used some cotton twill tape Frank had in the garage.  He didn't tell me he had this wonderful tape!  I think he tried to sneak it in on me.  He knew I would lust after it.

Here is my bundle rolled but not tight yet.

 I wrapped it like a little mummy!  This is like what the Egyptians did with herbs and ointments and naards.  After I wet the whole thing, I buried the mummy in a very dark dirt flower pot because I didn't want the idiot child to dig it up.  I will try to remember to keep it moist and see what grows.

I couldn't decide whether to put it in a soda ash soak or pour some vinegar on it.  I think the rusting process will happen over time and moisture without the vinegar, but if not I can rust it after I dig it up.

I want to keep it buried until spring when I replant the pot.  This might be a new use for over-wintering pots!
