In the Interest of Full Disclosure

I the interest of full disclosure I have the following numbers:

(I think, according to the sidebar anyway)

4 that need binding
8 that need quilting then binding

.....and now a Red/White/Blue quilt for Cousin Karen that will need to  be finished to a top and then a backing found and quilting done and binding......whew!

And........

Alll the others on the sidebar list that need finishing in some way or other.

And you know what?  I have not done a thing in the sewing room yesterday or today.  Not a thing.

I have been dealing with CAAWS, Frank, and finding where they keep the blizzards at Dairy Queen.

Today, for example, I researched/priced/negotiated/and ordered a cage bank for the Cat Room.  This will clean up a trashy corner of their Cat Room and help them look more professional and adoptable when visitors come to look at cats.

The pictures are pre-construction and during construction.  yes, I had two construction sites i was managing at one time!  Can you say "bang your head on the wall"?

Our cats roam free in the room, but when fosters bring the off site cats in for Adoption Day they need to be separated from the territorial in house herd.  Cats can be pretty snarky with the occasional short term cat visitor and we don't need that display.

They need to look cute and cuddly, not mean and frightening!

Speaking of the twins...........

Finishing and Losing

One of my guild mates passed away unexpectedly about two months ago.  At the guild meeting tonight, Joni brought about 23 quilts that needed to be bound.  They were part of 38 quilts Joni found when she went through Debbie's stuff.

And we had a trunk show of her work.  She was adept at pulling colors together to make a beautiful visual impact.  She was an excellent seamstress and she created beautiful quilts with fairly detailed blocks.  She liked trying new things, new combinations.  And she always participated in challenges and classes in several guilds.

The family asked if the guild could finish the quilts and hold a sale of her fabrics and  notions.  That is scheduled for Sept 30, 2017.  Hopefully I can get there to get some good deals.

Joni was able to buy Debbie's Avante and has quilted the 23 quilts she brought to the meeting.  I took two baby quilts home to finish sewing the binding.

Debbie had 5 boys and a girl, 2 of whom are still living at home.  Her daughter is pregnant, due in a couple months.  Just having been there for the birth of my own grandchild, I really felt for her not having her mom there for her.

Now that makes me want to go in and finish some quilts!  I need to make some sort of deal with myself.  I need to finish two for every one I make, and finish that one too!

Or maybe finish three for each new one.........Joni challenged us with the question:

What would your guild have to finish for you if you left this earthly plane too soon?

And when I watch My 600 Lb Life I want to go work out!

I seem to have a lot of things to fix.

T-Shirt Backs

 T shirt backs.

I used to throw them all away.  Until I saw one girl at retreat whose customer wanted her to use all parts of the shirts she could.  So she made a whole second quilt using the backs of the t shirts.  And it didn't break the universe.

So I dug through my garbage cans.  And the bag I was giving to The Purple Cow.

And I dug out a significant number of things that could be used for some quilts.   I think I can get about 3 quilts from the shirts.  This is the first.

I will admit the quilting is not spectacular.  But I wanted it to be fun and large and looping.

I will trim up 4 quilts tomorrow.

And maybe add some borders to 3 more.

Yep, I am all about finishing up some stuff.  Finishing.  Stuff.  Yep.

And I am cold.

(PS - it is so cold here, well like 42, but i blowing the garbage cans around.  It is supposed to get to 30 or less tonight.)

Cold.  Seriously.  Cold.

Bricks

I don't know why I think I hate doing Applique.  I really do enjoy it  once I get in there doing it .  One of the bricks Fayne brought me was shaped like a house.  And I knew I had some  fabric that looked like tiny bricks.  It was perfect, just perfect!

But the morning was fraught with its own problems.   I must've knocked over one of my ironing water bottles because my floor was covered with water under the  ironing board.   And I lost my glue sticks somewhere along the way.  And until I can find it I can't finish covering the bridge with batting .

I guess what I need to do is to work on some of the other bricks until my glue sticks surface again.  Aughhh.......

I know, I know.  I need to just clean up my room for once and for all, and forget about just the little individual days that I go in there piddling around playing clean up.

Although, I guess good things want to finish for Shannon's daughter, Caitlynne

I will have to tell you about Shannon in another post.

The quilt is made from doilies that Frank's mother crocheted endlessly.   When we moved her from the house in Shreveport we had closets and closets of these things.  I made a very similar quilt for Frank's Aunt Emma after his mother died.  She was so glad to have something of her sister's since all their stuff had been lost in Hurricane Katrina.  I think Caitlynne will like having something her great grandmother made.
Sometimes these UFOs on my floor have a good purpose.  If I had thrown it out or just finished it and gave it away, I wouldn't have the connection for Caitlynne.

Yes, that is why it pays to be messy and unorganized!

Alligators - And Skateboard Quilts

Currently I am working on more boys' quilts for the April 4 wedding.  Thank goodness for negative space!  I have finished one top and have the other to put together this morning.  Here they are.  They will be oriented as such, and even though similar, they will be different.  I only had one child so we had none of the bickering that came with more than one wanting the same thing.  It was nice.  Although, with my low tolerance for anything uselessly ridiculous as that, it would have been fixed in a hurry!

More photos from the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans.

There are several ways to be an alligator in Louisiana.

We eat them.  Not withstanding the sauteed Alligator Sauce Piquant and the Alligator Over Grits we had at the wedding; which are not my choice of good cuisine.  But if you are here you really should try it.  And we also fry them.

Tastes  like chicken!

We ride alligators.  This is one of the old carousels in the city.  There are two; one is in City Park and the other here in Audubon Park.  We call them Flying Horses.  Actually, I don't really remember all the alligators and leopards on this one at all.  All I remember are the horses.  When I was young, my mother's parents raised me for the first 5 or 6 years of my life.  They lived 2 blocks off the Audubon Park and we would go to the zoo and ride the ponies and play on the Flying Horses.  I have many many many wonderful memories of them and few of my mother.  Less of my father even.  But that was the way it was even then.  I certainly had a lot of love from my grandparents, my mother was their only child and I was their only grandchild for 5 years until my brother came around.  He didn't have the relationship with Ganny and Papa like I did.  I miss them to this day.

And we look at alligators.  I don't  really like to look at them, they remind me of some prehistoric monster that ate my fellow cave dwellers.

Look at this fat old tail!  Some would think that would be some good eating!  That actually looks like McGee's fat little short legs!  I wish there was some point of reference to show you how huge these two were.  I would say the one on the bank was a good 15 feet long.

Do you notice something different about these two alligators?  They are albino.  Rare, so they will escape the fry pot.

Unlike the somewhat more common regular albinos, leucistic white alligators have brilliant blue eyes. The first leucistic alligators were discovered in a swamp near Houma, Louisiana in 1987. Their bright coloring makes it impossible for them to survive in the wild since the sun would burn them, so 18 leucistic hatchlings were brought to the Zoo. International media attention quickly turned them into the Zoo’s most enduring symbol. A single female was discovered in 1994, and two more were found in 2009. All have become part of the Audubon family, although some of the gators are eventually transferred to other facilities around the country. These three discoveries are the only documented cases of leucistic alligators in recorded human history.

So you learned something new today!

Getting Colder ----- Time for Santa Photos

It is a good thing we have lots and lots and lots of quilts!  The weather has gotten quite cold in just one day.  We woke to 36 degrees this morning and just two days ago it was 89.  Whew!  What a change.

I can say one thing, the Swissys never snuggled like this!

Frank and I scrambled to bring in the ferns last night in the dark with the wooley creatures lurking in the darkness just out of our flashlight range.  You can hear the twigs snapping as they walk along the fenceline.  Chloe loves to sit out until all hours of the night and commune with the night creatures.  We make sure she has her heartworm preventative every month as I am sure she gets mosquitoes.

Don't forget to bring your dogs out to Harley Davidson on Seigen Lane in Baton Rouge on Nov 11 from 9-3 or so for Santa CAAWS photos.  We really need the revenue and you get beautiful pictures from a professional photograhpher.  If you don't want to bring your dogs, bring your kids or grandkids, we have children who have grown up with us all these years.

See this beautiful couple?  And the people are cute too!

Two Quilts To Live In Texas

These quilts will go to a dear friend of mine who lives in Keller TX.  We met years and years ago over a couple of tri-colored dogs.  We crossed paths several times at activities, the local clubs were very active back then because we all worked hard to set things up.  No so much today, no one sets up picnics or club things anymore.

We hiked together, we went to Fun Day Picnics, had weight pulls and we showed our beautiful dogs at shows all over the south and southwest.  Now, both of our dogs are gone, crossed that Rainbow Bridge, taking a piece of our hearts with them.
But the friendship remained, and we still talk every once in a while.  When I am in the Dallas area I call and try to see her.

And I can think of no better place to send my quilts than to my dear friend in Texas.

The Merlot Grapevine was made in 2006 in response to a challenge issued by a local guild.  We were to take a block and change it by adding a line or subtracting a line.  The new block would be used in a quilt we were to design.  When I made the change in my block, it looked like a grapevine trellis to me, hence the grapes.  I am not the best applique person, but they have stayed on all these years!

The Christmas quilt was a fun way to use up my pieces.  On the back of this Christmas quilt I used a large piece of fabric that has Swissy pups dressed in sweaters, like they really need sweaters!

Have happy  thoughts of me and the Swissys when you snuggle up with my quilts.

I Am Thinking......

And that could be very very dangerous!

I am thinking that I want to see how many quilts I can get quilted in one month.  And I may have to wait until September.  I may slip a couple in before then, and acually see how many I can get done before then.  Oh, heck.....I don't know what I am doing yet!  LOL.

I have that Quilt From Hell on the frame at the present time.  I still need to rip out one and a half rows of lizards and see if I can get the tension back to normal.  Then the rest of August is full, our 40th Anniversary and the fun we will have celebrating with friends and Carrie.  Forty years is a long time, I think, now a days when so many people are working on their second marriages, and quite a few are working on their thirds even.

Carrie gave us a weekend in one of the plantations in Natchez MS.  We are excited to be heading there to celebrate and have it scheduled for one of the August weekends.  More on that later.

And this week Frank is taking care of the babies while I am off at that 4 or 5 day retreat.  So I won't reply to messages unless I have a decent signal, which, I am not sure will happen.  Boondocks are closer to civilization than I will be!

See ya, soon.

A June Challenge

Are you up for a little healthy competition?  You bet!

I will have a prize with this one too!  No out of the US please.  Shipping is just too expensive to send it across the world!  Sorry!

Here is the deal.  I have a lot of quilt tops to be quilted.  How about you come and get a box full and see how many you can finish.......no not really, although it would be nice!

I have a lot of quilt tops to be quilted.  Ones that have been around since the beginning of time it seems.  How about if we see how many of our UFO tops we can get done in June?  I count 25 or 26 just in these two boxes and a stack.  That is the majority of the tops from the last 10-12 years that got put aside or I had no idea how to quilt them.  Well, now with my machine working and a set of patterns being drawn up, I can handle it.

Can I remember that far ahead into June?  I will put a thingy on the side of my blog and get rid of some stuff there cluttering it up, how's that?  And if you want to join in, we can have a list of those working on the project.

If you just want to get a few done and play along, let's have fun.  It may be me and one other person and that is fine.  I do have a lot of tops and I need some sort of incentive to get SOMETHING started! LOL.
